Our view is that the best starting point is the responsibility itself. A useful engagement makes its contribution clear enough that you can judge whether it deserves space in your week.

What a better working week could look like

Consider a hypothetical owner comparing supplier proposals for a costly business purchase. This example illustrates a possibility, not a specific client engagement or guaranteed result. The owner wants a clearer view of the competing claims, available public evidence, contradictions worth investigating, and questions the leadership team must answer. AI could help make that research more organized and reviewable, leaving the owner better prepared for the human discussion.

That possibility has a current foundation: OpenAI describes research capabilities that gather and synthesize information, compare sources, and produce reports with citations. Those capabilities support exploration; they do not verify a supplier's promises or decide which purchase is right for the business. That decision remains with the owner.

What to look for in AI experts for Vistage members

“AI expert” is a broad description. Our recommendation is to judge the proposed working relationship against the problem you want help with:

• Relevant current practice. The provider can explain what today's tools could contribute to your responsibility, where they fail, and what evidence would make the proposed result credible.
• A clear scope. You can tell whether you are buying personal capability, shared learning, advice, or implementation. Each requires a different commitment and owner.
• Executive context. The provider understands why a polished answer may still be unsuitable for a consequential business decision.
• Patient private attention. You can ask basic questions, revisit uncertainty, and work at a pace that fits your experience.
• Continuity and discretion. The engagement keeps the desired result visible while respecting your Chair relationship, peer commitments, and company boundaries.

Peer trust deserves its own boundary

Personal AI capability does not require bringing other members' information into a coaching engagement. Our recommendation is to keep peer-group recordings, notes, and another member's business details outside the scope unless all necessary permissions and appropriate handling have been established. Your own approved company work can provide the context instead.

Company approval matters separately from a coach's discretion. A private session or an NDA does not make every AI account suitable for sensitive information. Product terms, organizational policies, and any applicable commitments still govern what may be used.

NIST's Generative AI Profile identifies confidently false output, privacy risks, and human over-reliance. An executive should therefore expect a coach to make uncertainty visible and preserve human review.
